About Labette Lake Wildlife Area

Labette Lake Wildlife Area encompasses the 1,030-acre Labette Lake and its surrounding lands located in Labette County, southeastern Kansas. The area serves as an important habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, and diverse aquatic species. Labette Lake itself is a flood control reservoir built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s and managed cooperatively with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to provide quality recreational opportunities and wildlife habitat. The surrounding wetlands and wooded areas provide excellent conditions for migratory birds, making it a popular spot for birdwatchers. The reservoir supports a variety of fish species including bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill, attracting anglers throughout the year. Due to its shallow depths and abundant shoreline, the lake is ideal for boating, canoeing, and kayaking. The wildlife area also offers hiking and wildlife viewing trails, allowing visitors to experience the diverse habitats and seasonal changes. Visitors appreciate the tranquil setting, excellent fishing, and opportunities to observe waterfowl during migration seasons. Although there are no developed campgrounds directly within the wildlife area, nearby campgrounds and accommodations provide convenient access for overnight stays. Labette Lake Wildlife Area remains a vital green space that balances flood control functions with outdoor recreation and wildlife conservation in southeastern Kansas.
